Student Panel Guidelines:

The technical program and organizing committees for FIE 2023 would like to invite you to submit a proposal for undergraduate and/or graduate student panels. Since this is the first time FIE offers this opportunity, we encourage topics of the type:

  • First year experiences and policies,
  • Student Experiences in their respective programs and campuses,
  • Interdisciplinary capstone projects,
  • Broadening Participation (e.g. DEI, HSI, HBCU, MSI, Land Grant),
  • Mental Health (e.g. Well-being, community building),
  • Governance at engineering schools,
  • Others (e.g. AI Tools-ChatGPT, Transformational Engineering Education).

These panels are intended to provide students an opportunity to speak about topics that they are particularly passionate about. These panel sessions are not limited to purely technical or academic topics. An example of a less technical student panel title might be the following: “Student experiences at a large Land Grant R1 Institution”, “Minority student experiences in a Predominately White Discipline”, or “Minority Serving Institution student experiences in a Predominately White Discipline”. In the interest of clarity, a panel is an opportunity for individuals to gather together, address pre-determined topics, gather new perspectives, and interact with the audience for either a predetermined amount of time at the end of a session or periodically throughout the session. There is an option to include one non-student member of a panel. That non-student could either be a prospective student or a graduated student, or in some cases an expert on student success as it relates to the topic you are proposing. These are not definitive options for the non-student member of a panel but rather examples for potential panelists. We are optimistic that the panels conducted by students will be powerful opportunities of growth for the panelists and the audience. Again, in the interest of clarity, there is no requirement that the panels be non-technical, but both technical and non-technical panels are very welcome to submit for approval. We thank each and every person submitting for their courage to participate in a session such as this at this year’s FIE 2023 conference.

Please follow the instructions and rubrics for panels under submission guidelines on our website. The approximate time allotted for each student panel is 40 minutes. The due date for submissions is July 10th.

We look forward to a more active participation of students in this conference!
